Baptism

Baptism is the sign and seal of incorporation into Christ. Baptism signifies the faithfulness of God, the washing away of sin, rebirth, putting on the fresh garment of Christ, being sealed by God’s Spirit, adoption into the covenant family of the church, and resurrection and illumination in Christ. The body of Christ is one, and Baptism is the bond of unity in Christ.

Who may be baptized?

We believe in a single baptism that can be performed at any age. We recognize infant, children, youth and adult baptisms for members and their children.

Infants

We understand that baptizing infants is symbolic of our theological understanding that we do not earn nor work for baptism – it is a gift of God’s grace to the undeserving. Parents wanting to have their children baptized meet with one of our pastors to set the date and time and to explore the meaning of baptism.

When

Baptisms are celebrated during Sunday services. Baptisms are scheduled with a pastor with sensitivity to the family and their friends who may be attending this special occasion, and in coordination with the life of the church.

Responsibility

The congregation as a whole assumes responsibility for nurturing the baptized person in the Christian life. Baptism is authorized by the session of the church.

Godparents

The congregation as a whole acts as ‘godparents’ to the newly baptized. Trinity Presbyterian Church does recognize the significance of godparents and will support those families who choose individuals to fulfill those worthy roles in their child’s life.
